Nancy Pelosi's trip to China's Taiwan in her capacity as speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States was a blatant violation of the one-China principle, which has been recognized by the entire international community, including the United States.

Her visit to the island brought home to all how serious the consequences of the collusion of the island's secession-desiring authorities and the US may be.

The largest-ever military drills staged by the People's Liberation Army around Taiwan seem to have caught many countries unawares, Southeast Asian countries in particular, although Beijing has made clear on numerous occasions, and now in its latest white paper, that Taiwan is a core interest of China and what that means.

Whatever she has since said about her visit, there is more than enough reason for countries to understand what Pelosi did was reckless and for them to be concerned about the positioning of her visit in the US' China policy.

Reluctant as they are to take sides between the US and China, they know that how well US-China relations are managed will have a direct bearing on the future of their economic and social development and that what she did was a blatant provocation. The deterioration of relations between the world's largest and second-largest economies, potentially even a clash between the two, will disrupt the stability of the region and thereafter negatively impact the unity and development of the region and beyond.

That explains why even those regional countries that have sought US backing in their territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea have remained silent, instead of choosing to stand with the US to criticize China's response to the visit.

The same is true of the broader international community. More than 170 countries have voiced their support for the one-China principle. The United Nations has also clarified its maintenance of General Assembly Resolution 2758, the core of which is the one-China principle.

The whole world knows how important China-US relations are for the peace and development of the world economy and for the concerted efforts of the international community to tackle common challenges humanity faces.

And the whole world knows that China has tried hard to mend its relations with the US. Countries also know that China will not compromise on its core interest for that purpose, and that by paying a visit to Taiwan, Pelosi has played one of Washington's favorite tricks, framing the instigation of a crisis in such a way that it can portray its own foreign policy goals as the moral imperative of the whole world.

It is the US and the speaker of its House of Representatives that have violated the US' one-China policy, consecrated in the three joint communiques the US has signed with China.

The entire world knows that it is the US that is in the wrong whatever it claims otherwise.
