Forecasters issued a blue weather alert warning for sandstorms. China has a four-tier, color-coded weather-warning system, with red representing the most severe warning and blue representing the least.

The city government has also advised the public to take precautions against the heavy winds and sandstorms, and suggested that drivers prepare for poor visibility.

In response to the dusty weather, Beijing Forestry and Parks Bureau announced on Monday night that all outdoor gathering, activities and sports events should by suspended.
