Local residents performed Nuo Opera earlier this month in Linwu county of Chenzhou, Hunan province. The opera serves as a prayer for good luck and a happy life this year.

Nuo Opera is an ancient folk drama whose performers wear masks and dance to drive away ghosts and disease. It has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.

Linwu county has about 500 years of history performing Nuo Opera. Locals participate to make a wish or show gratitude to gods who can make their wishes come true. It combines ceremonies, dancing, singing and literature.
