Trains from across China gather at Manzhouli and head to Russia and other European countries. On return, trains from Europe via Russia enter Manzhouli and head to other cities in China. The efficiency at Manzhouli Railway Port is key to the time of the China-Europe freight trains.

For cross-border trains, one of the time-consuming processes is to reload containers at the border station.

The width of the railway tracks in China is 1,435 millimeter and in Russia it is 1,520 millimeter. Because the railway gauges are different in China and Russia, cross-border trips involve reloading containers from one gauge to another.
