Chinese team performs eye surgeries in Africa

A medical team from the Ningxia Hui autonomous region is in the West African country of Benin to perform eye cataract surgeries and train others, following an invitation from the country's ministry of health. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

In addition, the team will also provide training on cataract surgery standards and new techniques.

Qiu said that Ningxia People's Hospital sent the necessary equipment and supplies to Benin last month.

Lyu Jinhan, director of the Ningxia Health Commission, said he hopes that through short- and long-term support, teams from the region can help build highly skilled medical staffs in Benin who will be irreplaceable.

China began sending medical teams to Benin in March 1978. Over the past 45 years, Ningxia has provided 26 groups of medical personnel — 616 people — to fulfill the foreign aid mission.
