Speaking at the event, Adam Pettitt, head of Highgate School, highlighted to students that International Chinese Language Day was established in 2010 and observed annually on April 20, coinciding with the Chinese solar term Grain Rain (Guyu), a season symbolizing rainfall, growth and renewal in agriculture. The day also honors Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese characters.
Pettitt noted that language learning is important not only for practical purposes but also for fostering friendship and cross-cultural understanding. He encouraged students to view language learning as a gateway to connection and mutual understanding.
