People who have visited DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the past 21 days are barred from entering the US, except for US citizens, according to a US order in May.

Nonetheless, Kavuma is optimistic about the trip.

The group will be Uganda's only representation at the tournament, with its national team having failed to qualify for the World Cup.

The performance holds great significance for his group, which he said is now "one big family" — one that started from the fringes of Ugandan society.

"Before joining the group, we weren't going to school, we weren't traveling, we weren't getting the basic needs," Ssegirinya said.

"If I weren't part of the group, I don't know where I would be," he added.
