Rural infrastructure

China will invest more than 50 billion yuan (US$6.25 billion) this year in rural areas, with most of the money being spent to boost production and build infrastructure such as roads, the government's top planning body said.

More than 31 billion yuan (US$3.9 billion) will be used to subsidize grain production, build gas and power facilities and roads, and improve education and health services, the National Development and Reform Commission said in a statement last week. It didn't say how the rest of the money would be used.

China wants to increase spending in rural areas to boost farmers' income as a means of increasing domestic consumption. The government hopes to shift resources to the countryside, since two decades of economic growth  averaging more than 9 per cent a year  has mostly benefited urban areas.
