Pan Rong, a woman from Minhang district of Shanghai, was called "a brave woman" by netizens for throwing self-made Molotov cocktails at authorities to protest the forcible demolition of her house.

Pan' s four-story house was to be demolished because it was standing inside the Shanghai Hongqiao Integrated Transport Project area. The project was started in 2006 and is to be completed at the end of this year. Over 5,000 rural households were asked to move out of the area.

Pan and her family refused to move. They were dissatisfied with the compensation of 1.18 million yuan offered by the Shanghai Airport Authority, builder of the project.

After one year of futile talks between the two sides, the government of Minxing district ordered Pan's house demolished by force. When excavators arrived on June 11, 2008, Pan threw Molotov cocktails made from wine bottles and gasoline.

However, the self-made explosives failed to prevent the demolition work. Pan and her husband were seized and their house was pulled down.

Pan's husband was imprisoned for eight months.
