Chinese shares close higher, led by strong heavyweights

BEIJING: Chinese equities rose the most in more than a month Monday led by market heavyweights including China Construction Bank and China Petroleum and Chemical Corp, which reported encouraging profits.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 3,123.8 points, up 2.09 percent, or 64.08 points. The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 12,552.45 points, up 312.09 points, or 2.55 percent.

Combined turnover was 251.35 billion yuan ($36.8 billion), expanding from 185.75 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 647 to 211 in Shanghai and 582 to 297 in Shenzhen.
