HK's exports up 8.9% in October

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's total exports of goods increased by 8.9 percent from a year earlier in October, said the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong government on Thursday.

In October 2010, the volume of Hong Kong's re-exports of goods increased by 9.0 percent over October 2009, while that of domestic exports increased by 5.7 percent.

Concurrently, the volume of imports of goods jumped by 6.8 percent year-on-year.

Comparing the first 10 months of 2010 with the same period in 2009, the volume of Hong Kong's re-exports of goods grew significantly, by 20.6 percent, while that of domestic exports increased by 15.9 percent.

In the January-October period, the volume of total exports of goods increased by 20.5 percent, while the volume of imports of goods increased by 21.2 percent from a year earlier.

Comparing October 2010 with October 2009, the prices of re-exports of goods increased by 5.4 percent, while that of domestic exports increased by 6.5 percent, data showed.

In October 2010, double-digit increases were recorded for the total export volume to the United States and Japan, reaching 13.2 percent and 12 percent respectively over October 2009, said the department.
