FUZHOU: A senior Taiwan affairs official in the capital of East China's Fujian Province said yesterday the province will take "more active" measures to attract investment from Taiwan.

The province also wants the Taiwan authorities to be "more open" so that more mainland enterprises could invest on the island.

Lin Weiguo, deputy director of Fujian Provincial Taiwan Affairs Office, said Fuzhou has approved the establishment of 1,640 Taiwan-invested enterprises, with the total contractual investment of US$3.15 billion.

Lin made the remarks during the 12-day 2003 Cross-Straits Scientific and Technological Achievements Fair & Conference on Economy and Trade in Fuzhou, which started on Sunday.

You Xiuhua, the business representative of Jinmen, said the fair has provided an opportunity for Taiwan business people to sell their commodities to the Chinese mainland.

Chen Jianyong, director of the association of Taiwan-invested enterprises in Fuzhou, said that more than 130 Taiwan-invested enterprises have attended the fair. And the number of companies invested in by Taiwan businessmen in Fuzhou has almost reached 900.

Most Taiwan business people believe the good investment conditions in Fuzhou will prove successful for them.
