Chinese police make arrests in connection with Xinjiang killings

URUMQI - Police in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have arrested a handful of suspects in connection with the killings of three security staff at a checkpoint on August 12.

Police encountered an unspecified number of people in a corn field in Shule County, Kashi Prefecture, on Friday evening as they were investigating the August 12 attack, said a spokesman with Kashi police department.

The suspects put up a "desperate struggle" and the police fought back, the spokesman said.

No further details were provided.

Four security staff were attacked at a road checkpoint in Yamanya Town, Shule County, on August 12. Only one of the four survived, but with injuries. The assailants fled after the attack.
