China calls for int'l efforts to resolve Russia-Georgia conflict
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-09-04 20:21 BEIJING - China voiced hope on Thursday the international community could "create favorable conditions" to promote a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Georgia conflict through dialogue. She also called on the international efforts to be conducive to the peace and stability in the South Ossetia region. Russia's recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two breakaway regions of Georgia, as independent states last week, further increased tension in the region. The conflict began early last month when Tbilisi sent in troops to reclaim South Ossetia. Russia quickly mounted a counter-offensive by sending in its forces to drive out the Georgians. The fighting ended with a ceasefire agreement brokered by France. |
