Nine dead in mine accident in Ningxia

SHIZUISHAN, Ningxia -- Nine people were killed in a mining accident in Shizuishan, Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Guangdong Hongda Blasting Co Ltd was using explosives at 6:15 pm Thursday at the Dafeng Coal Mine. It is unclear what went wrong but rescuers said 42 people were injured. Nine others were killed and two people are still missing.

Qi Tongsheng, vice chairman of the Ningxia regional government, has arrived at the site to coordinate rescue efforts.

An investigation is under way.
