"Altogether 119 workers underground and 38 above ground were evacuated to safe areas an hour after the quake," said Duan Mingdao, deputy manager of Yihai Energy Company that runs the Dameigou Coal Mine, about 15 kilometers from the epicenter. The three injured workers were sent to the hospital.

Duan said the quake cut the mine's communication network and power supplies for hours but power resumed within the day.

Big cracks were seen on most mining buildings and the workers' dorms were in dangerous conditions. The company bought 20 tents to accommodate its 700-strong workforce.

The mine has suspended operation, Duan said.
