Candy firm cleans up act, ready to export

White Rabbit Creamy Candy, which was found to be contaminated with melamine earlier in the year, will be back on sale around the world from the spring, its manufacturer said Wednesday.

"Exports of the candy will begin again in March or April," Weng Mao, general manager of Guan Sheng Yuan Food, was quoted as saying by the Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post.

The product will be better than it was before, he claimed, without elaborating.

Guan Sheng Yuan company halted exports of the candy and recalled domestic supplies in late September, after 27 countries and regions reported they were contaminated with melamine.

Dairy products containing the chemical, which could cause kidney stones and other illnesses, have caused the deaths of four babies and made 53,000 others sick in the country.

Weng said the candy went back on sale in the country last month and is now available at 95 percent of its usual outlets.

China Business News Wednesday quoted Ding Shaohui, secretary-general of the China National Candy Association, as saying the negative effects of the melamine scandal are starting to fade, and that the industry could this year still achieve growth of more than 10 percent.
