Strong quake jolts seas off southeast Taiwan

TAIPEI - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted the seas off southeastern Taidung county of Taiwan at 11:16 a.m. Tuesday at a depth of 29.8 kilometers, according to the weather bureau in Taipei.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage so far.

The epicenter was initially determined to be 23.28 degrees north latitude and 121.6 degrees east longitude.

Taipei and other parts of the island felt the tremor, with a seismic station in Taidung recording a seismic degree up to five.

However, the China Earthquake Networks Center says the quake had a magnitude of 5.1.
