SHANGHAI -- The general development of women and children in Shanghai has been good, according to a report by the municipal government.

The participation of women in decision-making, management and political issues has increased, the report said. It was released at a press conference yesterday.

The report is a mid-term evaluation on the development of Shanghai's women and children during the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10). It said the number of women Party delegates, deputies to legislatures, and members of political advisory bodies, was on the rise.

The number of woman Party delegates to municipal congress, was 32 percent; deputies to the people's congresses, 28.1 percent; and members of the municipal people's political consultative conference, 20.9 percent. An increase of 6, 3.6 and 3.1 percentage points respectively over the previous plan.

Women corporate directors and supervisors accounted for 38.8 percent and 38.2 percent, and those in other management roles, 31.8 percent.

Zhang Lili, president of the Shanghai municipal women's federation, said: "More women should make greater efforts to contribute to the city's economic development. They should exercise their democratic rights."

The report said education for women and children had been improved, and judicial protection for them strengthened.

"Various policies benefiting women and children have been implemented and some have achieved good results," Zhang said.
