XI'AN -- Three teenage girls and a boy were confirmed dead in a hit-and-run accident in the suburbs of Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Tuesday morning, the local government said.

The accident happened at around 6:05 a.m. on state highway No. 108, killing four junior high students and injuring one, said a spokesman of the Chang'an District government.

He said the students, aged from 13 and 15, were on their way to Doumen Junior Hig School in Chang'an District.

"The injured student was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors said the injury was not life-threatening," the spokesman said. He did not identify the students.

Chinese rural students habitually arrive at schools before 7 a.m.

Police have launched an investigation and are looking for clues leading to the arrest of the driver.
