From janezhang88:

For living--Kunming is the first choice

For education--Beijing is the fit one

For experiencing fashionable life--then go to Shanghai.

From etatdaccord:

Shanghai will be the world's new New York if things go to plan. The place is eye-popping. When the UN moves it's HQ you'll know the deal is sealed.

Beijing is more like a washington, perhaps more refined and genteel with the political power, to Shanghai's new york. Shanghai will be the engine room and the place people from all over the world will move to to live their lives at the very cutting edge of science, arts and business. Might take about 20 years though. Check back with me in 2030.

From victorj:

Absolutely, the pride of "the most" will belong to Shanghai.

In a long run, Shanghai must become the engine of China's economy.

Overall, I still remember a most popular actor's lines of the movie, "what's the most valuable stuff of 21’th century? -- Talents". There is no doubt that Shanghai's basic content of people is more huge than Hong Kong. The reserving of high-educated person will offer shanghai enough ability in the competition.

You may ask: Now, Hong Kong government can attract more technical experts to Hongkong than Shanghai can do. Of course, Shanghai can't compare with Hong Kong on the salary, on the wage. But, never mind, the high price is only the one of the all.

It includes lots of aspects, such as research environment and talents mass effect. This kind of environment usually can't be resolved only by spending money. This can be boiled down to the culture accumulation. If the World War II hadn't happened and Japan hadn't invaded China, I think Hong Kong will never catch up and surpass Shanghai.
