FM: Three-nation tour a success for Hu
(China Daily)
Updated: 2009-06-22 08:21 President Hu Jintao's three-nation tour succeeded in enhancing friendship, boosting cooperation and promoting common development with relevant countries, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Saturday. During the June 14-20 tour, Hu attended the ninth annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and paid state visits to Russia, Slovakia and Croatia. While the global financial crisis continues to spread, regional security faces new challenges and countries share a desire to deepen cooperation and promote development, Yang said.
SCO members have agreed to increase their cooperation, while China played a unique role, pledging a $10-billion loan for joint projects among members and its proposals to consolidate members' efforts in building trust, increasing security collaborations and dealing with the crisis, Yang said. The comprehensive security cooperation system of the SCO was improved, showing to the international community the SCO member states' determination and confidence to jointly combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, as well as cross-border crimes, Yang said. On the sidelines of the summit, Hu reached important consensus with the leaders of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Iran and Pakistan on developing bilateral ties and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, which improved China's mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation with these countries. BRIC summit Yang said the meeting of the leaders of the BRIC nations was of historic significance. The leaders exchanged views on major economic and development issues and ways to tackle the ongoing global financial crisis. They also laid out a blueprint for BRICs' future dialogue, cooperation and coordination. Hu put forth China's view on the BRIC cooperation amid the current financial crisis with proposals to strengthen political mutual trust, deepen economic cooperation, promote cultural exchanges and encourage sharing each other's useful experiences among the BRIC nations. BRIC countries have reached consensus on the global financial crisis, energy security, food security and climate change, thereby boosting the influence of the emerging economies and developing nations in international affairs, Yang said.
