MACAO: Four Macao residents, including a former high-ranking official of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), submitted their candidacy and application forms to the SAR's election authorities on Tuesday.

The four applicants aimed to acquire their legitimate candidacy in the upcoming chief executive (CE) election as Tuesday was the last day for the election's nomination process.

The SAR's former secretary for social affairs and culture Chui Sai On, who submitted his nomination form on June 16, garnered an overwhelming 286 nominations from the 300-member SAR chief executive (CE) election panel.

Under the SAR's CE Election Law, anyone who intends to run for the CE office must be nominated by at least 50 of the 300 members of the CE Election Committee, within which the new CE will be elected.

Given the fact that the rest of the committee members do not meet the basic nomination number required by the law, and the members are only allowed to cast their nomination once, Chui will become the only CE candidate.

The other three applicants, including one local doctor and two unnamed residents, did not reveal whether they have acquired any effective nomination.

As the election of the SAR's third CE was scheduled to take place in July 26 this year, the official list of the CE candidates will be announced on June 30, according to the CE Electoral Affairs Committee, which oversees the upcoming CE election.
