Security guards ready for National Day celebration

BEIJING: A total of 220,000 security guards and 300,000 community volunteers in Beijing will be deployed on security duties for the October 1 National Day ceremony this year, an official said Tuesday.

"The success of the celebration ceremony will rest largely on its safety," said Ma Zhenchun, director of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, at a 100-day count-down rally on the 60th anniversary of the founding of new China.

A series of activities including a military parade, a fireworks party, and galas will be staged to mark the anniversary, said Yang Huanning, vice minister of public security, at the rally.

About 3,000 representatives of police, firefighters and the Armed Police took an oath at the rally that they will make all efforts to ensure the safety of the National Day celebrations.

Ma said that his bureau would learn from the 2008 Beijing Olympics security-maintaining experience.

He said the 18 districts and counties in Beijing have started to check hidden safety dangers and make efforts to maintain social order.

It is not clear how many police Beijing will deploy for the National Day ceremony.
