Uygur and Han Students unite against mobs
By Lei Xiaoxun (China Daily)
Updated: 2009-07-10 07:34 "Things are now fine on the campus; Han, Uygur and students of other ethnic minorities are getting along well as if the nightmare's over," medical science student Talat said on Wednesday. There have been no reports of any of the university's students having participated in the July 5 riot, something to be savored considering the large student population at XMU, Wufuer said. One XMU student remains missing following the incident, he added. "July 5 was a terrible time but it has already passed", Dong said. "Now we are sitting for the final exam and after that, all of us can go home." The university has also made special arrangements to ensure students' safety as they return home, school officials said. Some departments have chartered buses to transport students directly to railway and bus stations. "I am leaving tomorrow and I hope everything will soon be over," said a student from Hetian prefecture in southern Xinjiang. "The unity of all ethnic groups is our lifeline," said Wufuer, who attributed the courage demonstrated by XMU teachers and students to long-standing efforts by the university to help students of all ethnicities learn from each other and respect each other's traditions and customs. To improve mutual understanding, XMU helps its students learn different ethnic cuisines, Hamulati said. Traditional Uygur dancing and medical terms in the Uygur language are included in each Han student's curriculum. Similarly, every ethnic minority student is urged to learn some taichi. "Through continuous education, we let our students become well aware of the truth of separatism, extremism and terrorism," Wufuer said.
