Boy, 18, plots own kidnapping, busted

An 18-year-old boy in Kaiyang county, Guizhou province, who pretended to have been kidnapped to extort money from his parents was detained on Friday.

The boy, surnamed Li, was addicted to gambling and owed a huge debt.

He plotted his own kidnapping on Wednesday and phoned his parents, demanding a ransom of 30,000 yuan ($4,400).

Police traced the phone call and nabbed Li the same afternoon. He confessed to have faked his kidnapping.
