Four dead, 23 trapped in SW landslide

CHENGDU: Four people were killed, four injured and another 23 missing Thursday in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

They were working on the No. 211 provincial highway in Kangding County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, when the landslide occurred at about 3 am, according to the provincial disaster relief headquarters.

The victims were employed by China Road and Bridge Corporation and Sinohydro Bureau Seven Co., Ltd., rescuers said.

The landslide caused a lake about 3,000 long and 50 meters wide, holding about 3 million cubic meters of water. Rescuers are clearing the potential dangers of the lake. More than 50 people were evacuated from the disaster zone.

The injured are being treated in hospital and rescuers are searching for the missing.
