Xu was also expelled from the 11th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, where he was previously a representative, the Congress' standing committee said yesterday.

After the 53-year-old Xu was placed under investigation for corruption in June, Wang Rong, the former party chief of East China's Suzhou city, was tapped to serve as acting mayor.
