Funds and material donations from outside the Chinese mainland accounted for 31.1 percent of the total, said the report jointly issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the China Charity and Donation Information Center.

Almost half of the cash donations, 3.466 billion yuan, was given to support educational facilities, and 1.12 billion was given to areas affected by the 8-magnitude earthquake that struck Sichuan on May 12 last year, it said.

Sixty percent of donations from the Chinese mainland were contributed by companies, of which private companies donated more than 3.89 billion yuan.

Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces, and Shanghai and Beijing were the top six donor regions, showing that comparatively advanced regions remained the major contributors.
