Ships deployed to repair undersea cables

China Telecom has deployed engineering ships to repair undersea fiber-optic cables near Taiwan that were damaged by typhoon Morakot and a recent earthquake, Sina.com reported Tuesday.

China Telecom said in a statement Monday that they are also trying to reroute electronic traffic through backup cables. The typhoon and earthquake disrupted communication between the Chinese mainland and other areas including Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and the United States.

Still, weather and technical challenges mean that it will still take some time to repaire the cables, the company said.
