5.9-magnitude earthquake jolts NW China

Updated: 2009-08-31 19:49 XINING: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck remote Qinghai Province in northwest China at 6:15 pm Monday, the China Earthquake Administration said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property losses. The epicenter was located at 37.7 degrees north and 95.9 degrees east at a depth of 10 km.
More than 2,890 aftershocks had been registered near the epicenter of the 6.4-magnitude quake in the Da Qaidam (also known as Dachaidan) district in the Haixi prefecture, of which three were measured above 5 on the Richter scale. Monday's quake was the strongest aftershock so far. |
