Tropical storm lands in  S China's island province

HAIKOU: Tropical storm Mujigae landed in China's southernmost Hainan early Friday morning, bringing about downpours in Wenchang and Haikou areas of the island province.

According to the provincial meteorological bureau, the landing occurred at around 2:20 am Friday at Longlou Town of Wenchang city, packing up wind at 72 km per hour at the center of Mujigae, which is the 13th tropical storm this year.

The bureau forecast that Mujigae would move northwestward at a speed of 30 km per hour and traverse the northern part of the province. It was expected to reach the sea area in the eastern part of the Beibu Gulf, the bureau added.

Earlier report said that shipping services across south China's Qiongzhou strait were suspended Thursday afternoon for the safety of passengers in anticipation of Mujigae's arrival.

A total of 26,136 fishing boats had returned to harbors in Hainan and Fujian provinces.
