China produces 150 million tons of city waste every year, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

The country has been improving city waste management facilities while expanding urbanization is absorbing more people into cities, the ministry said.

Across the country, about 1.1 million people were working at the city waste management sector by the end of 2008, with 76,400 vehicles cleaning and carrying garbage, a rise of 60 percent from year 2000.
