More than $78b set for western campaign

The National Development and Reform Commission said the country will invest 468.9 billion yuan ($78 billion) into 18 key projects for the development of western regions, Xinhuanet reported today.

The 18 key projects focus on construction of railway and expressway networks, airports, water conservancy projects and hydropower stations, including Chengdu-Lanzhou railway, Kunming-Nanning railway, Xiamen-Chengdu expressway and Gongguoqiao hydropower station on Lancang River.

China invested more than 1,740 billion yuan ($290 billion) into 102 key projects in western areas, from 2000 to 2008, according to the commission .

Commission officials said those key projects will play a crucial role in improving people's livelihood and enhancing the economic and social development of the western regions.
