Construction of Taipei pavilion for SH Expo to start next month

TAIPEI: Construction of the Taipei Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo will start next month, the Taipei city government announced Tuesday.

The exhibition venue was expected to showcase the city to global visitors during the expo from May to October, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin said at a press conference.

The Taipei pavilion was divided into several areas, including a huge three-dimensional theater where visitors can have a virtual tour of tomorrow's Taipei via short movies and light-and-sound shows.

Two projects, Wireless Taipei and Taipei Infinity, will be demonstrated at the Taipei pavilion. They are among some 50 "urban best practices area" expo projects, which are designed to display solutions to urban issues, including energy efficiency to waste treatment, under the theme of "Better City, Better Life."

Visitors would see Taipei as an international metropolis defined by advanced technology, cultural diversity and a high quality of life, Hau said.

The construction of the Taipei Pavilion was scheduled to be completed in March, next year.

The 2010 Shanghai World Expo will remain open from May 1 to October31. It is expected to attract 70 million visitors, of whom 95 percent will be domestic visitors.

A total of 242 countries and international organizations had confirmed participation as of last month, according to the official Expo website.
