GUANGZHOU - One person died and 46 villagers were hospitalized after they ate fish from a reservoir on Tuesday in south China's Guangdong Province, a local official said Thursday.

An old lady surnamed Mao in her 80s was found dead by her neighbor Tuesday night, after eating pomfret from the Lengshuidong reservoir in Jiubei Township, Lianzhou City, said an official with the city's committee of the Communist Party of China.

Forty-six others who also ate the fish were sent to the township hospital, then transferred to the People's Hospital of Lianzhou. They showed symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and muscular soreness, the official said.

By Thursday afternoon, six villagers had been discharged from hospital, and others were in stable condition, he said.

Medical experts are investigating whether the lady died of food poisoning, the official said.
