Hu made the remarks when meeting visiting US President Barack Obama in the Great Hall of the People.

Obama noted it's a "fact" that "American people are interested in stronger relations with" Chinese people.

He called for more people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Obama also said his meeting with Hu is "very constructive", noting sound US and China cooperation on economics, security and other global issues will benefit both countries and the whole world.

They will meet the press later.

The 48-year-old US president arrived in Beijing last night after a one-day tour in Shanghai, east China's port city.
