Hubei official responds to 'fake' diploma

Authorities in Central China's Hubei province are trying to work out a solution to the problem of "fake" diplomas issued to primary and middle teachers in the province, reported www.people.com on Sunday.

People's Daily reported four days before that at least 12,000 teachers feel cheated because the diplomas they earned from the former Hubei College of Education are recognized only within the province, and not nationwide.

The Hubei education bureau had launched the pilot online diploma program at the college and at Hubei Radio and TV University in 2000. An anonymous official with the provincial education bureau told www.people.com that government departments will coordinate their efforts to ensure that the diplomas will be recognized in other provinces.

Details like the exact number of teachers affected haven't been made public.
