Brazil plans to enhance trade ties with China

BRASILIA: Brazil has taken its trade with China as a priority and will push for its further growth in the coming years, said a Brazilian trade official here Monday.

Brazil was planning to enhance its trade and investment relations with China, Welber Barral, secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, said in an interview with Xinhua.

He said the second meeting of Brazil-China High Level Coordination and Cooperation Commission (Cosban) would be held in March in Brazil.

"At the meeting, the work plan to increase trade relations, trade missions and investments between Brazil and China will be reviewed," he said.

The Cosban, established in May 2004, is an intergovernmental dialogue, coordination and cooperation mechanism of the highest level between the two countries.

It is committed to overall cooperation in areas of politics, economy, science and technology, agriculture, culture and education, aerospace, energy and resources, information industry and quarantine inspection. The first Cosban meeting was held in 2006.

Barral expected further growth in bilateral trade this year, especially in the agricultural sector.

He said that his country is actively involved in the 2010 Shanghai Expo, with several Brazilian cities actually attending the event.

"There's a whole calendar of events and on June 3 Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva will probably attend the Shanghai Expo," he said.
