Traditionally, families around Macao will throw out the old and bring in the new in the Chinese New Year. The campaign aims to take the chance to promote awareness of disease prevention and safe waste disposal, according to officials from the Civic Municipal Affairs Bureau of Macao special administrative region (SAR), which co-organized the event with 13 local associations.

During the event, local associations will have stalls with information about hygiene and disease prevention, as well as educational games and activities for kids about recycling and keeping the city tidy.

Residents can also volunteer at the event to take part in cleaning drives for areas around the city, including helping clean kindergartens and facilities for the elderly, or helping collect boxes of clothing that will be donated to local charitable associations.

According to Civic Municipal Affairs Bureau, a total of about 28,000 volunteers had registered to be volunteers in the event, which includes students from 44 schools around Macao.
