Taobao.com joins The Climate Group

BEIJING: Asia's largest online business platform taobao.com joined The Climate Group's growing global leadership coalition on Wednesday.

Taobao.com - an internet retail company who some have called China's answer to eBay, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart.com and Facebook rolled into one will work with the Climate Group to develop its corporate strategy for low carbon leadership, and to help influence its 170 million registered users to adopt low carbon life-styles.

Lu Zhaoxi, CEO of Taobao.com says: "Taobao.com is committed to building an honest, transparent, responsible and globalized e-business culture; one that has a positive impact on the environment. Taobao is not only reducing carbon emissions from its daily operations, but is promoting low carbon awareness through its powerful platform, which has 170 million registered users."

Part of Jack Ma's influential Alibaba Group, Taobao.com has already developed a comprehensive corporate low carbon strategy, including setting up a national low carbon logistics center; retro-fitting Taobao office buildings "low carbon" or "zero carbon"; and will develop its "low carbon consumer" education project aimed at encouraging more environmentally responsible behaviour across the company's 170 million customers.

Changhua Wu, Greater China Director of The Climate Group says: "Online shopping is hugely popular in China. It is also a low-carbon activity compared with traditional shopping, and can greatly reduce emissions from transportation and storage. Taobao.com is Asia's largest online business platform, and it definitely has an important role to play to promote low carbon life-styles among its 170 million registered users."

Other Chinese companies that have recently joined The Climate Group include China Mobile, Suntech, Broad Air Conditioning, Lenovo, CEICC and Tiptop Real Estate.
