Northeast China prison escapee caught

HARBIN - A man who escaped from a prison in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province two weeks ago was caught on Monday afternoon, said local authorities.

Chen Congcong, 21, was caught at around 3 p.m. in a grocery store in Nangang District of Harbin, the provincial capital, said a spokesman with the city's public security bureau. He did not give further details.

The public security department had offered a 50,000 yuan (7,325 US dollars) cash reward for information leading to Chen's capture.

Chen and his inmate, 23-year-old Sun Xingchen escaped from the Liming Prison in Harbin on February 23.

The two had just begun a 10-year jail term for robbery.

Sun was caught at the Jinxing toll gate on the No.102 National Highway linking Harbin and Beijing on the morning of February 26.
