SHENZHEN - Overloading was blamed for a scaffolding collapse that left nine people dead in Guangdong province Saturday, a local official said Monday.

An excessive amount of wooden boards had been piled up on the 23rd story of the scaffolding at a construction site in Shenzhen city, breaking the hoisting cables, said the official with the city's emergency response office.

Ten workers, who were working on the 34-story building, also added weight to the structure, he said.

The workers fell after the scaffold collapsed. Nine died at the scene and one injured man is still in critical condition in hospital.
