Mainland official welcomes Taiwan visitors to World Expo

BEIJING - A Chinese mainland official on Wednesday extended his welcome to Taiwan people to visit the upcoming Shanghai World Expo, scheduled to run from May 1 to October 31.

Yang Yi, spokesman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a regular press conference that the Chinese mainland would help Taiwan visitors travel between Taiwan and Shanghai.

Yang did not elaborate on specific measures.

He said the Shanghai World Expo had won extensive attention and active support from Taiwan compatriots and the Expo organizer planned to invite distinguished guests from Taiwan to attend the opening ceremony.

To date, a total of 242 countries and international organizations have confirmed their participation in the Expo, and 13,000 journalists from around the world have applied to cover the event.

The organizer has forecasted that the Shanghai World Expo would attract 70 million visitors.
