BEIJING - China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said here Sunday that it has never released any data on the country's corrupt officials fleeing abroad when commenting on recent media reports about the matter.

The media reports cited bogus government figures, said an unnamed official with the ministry's Information Office.

A number of media agencies recently reported that about 4,000 corrupt officials had fled the country with some $50 billion since the country's reform and opening-up in 1978, citing MOC data. One of the latest such reports was published by the Beijing-based Legal Mirror on Saturday.

The ministry has never investigated into the matter of fleeing corrupt officials, said the MOC official.
