TOKYO -- The illegally detained captain of a Chinese fishing boat is expected to leave Japan on Friday, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Earlier Friday, Japanese media reported that the Japanese authorities had decided to free the captain, Zhan Qixiong, who has been illegally detained since September 8.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in Beijing on Friday that the Chinese government will send a chartered plane to bring back Zhan.

"I reiterate that any form of the so-called judicial procedures taken by Japan against the Chinese captain is illegal and invalid, " Jiang said.
