BEIJING - Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said "2011 marks a year of great progress for China's peaceful development course" in an address at a New Year Reception hosted by the Foreign Ministry on Friday.
Noting that the world is moving toward multi-polarization, economic globalization and social informationization, Yang said countries in the world are becoming increasingly interdependent.
At the same time, as world economic recovery remains fragile and imbalanced, and some global challenges are becoming increasingly prominent, it is an irresistible trend for countries to seek for peace, development and cooperation, he said.
In 2011, China celebrated the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, made a good start on its 12th Five-Year Plan, and maintained the momentum of steady and fast economic growth, said Yang.
In this year, China enhanced coordination with all major powers, deepened good-neighborly friendship with its neighbors, and consolidated traditional friendship with a vast number of developing countries, Yang said.
China also actively participated in the reform of global economic governance, pushed forward the cooling down and resolution of hot issues, and promoted extensive cultural exchanges with other countries, the official said.
Yang reaffirmed that China will stick to the path of peaceful development, adhere to an independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the opening-up strategy of mutual benefit, and continue to make unremitting efforts for world economic recovery and world peace and stability.
In a speech, Nolana Ta-Ama, dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Togo's ambassador to China, hailed China's diplomatic achievements in 2011.
This year has seen Chinese government's efforts in lifting its people out of poverty, seeking comprehensive development of economy and society, overcoming natural disasters as well as preventing and mitigating environmental deterioration and climate change, he said.
In the meantime, China adhered to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, committed to developing friendly relations with its neighbors, boosted bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation, and safeguarded regional stability.
China also promoted the establishment of an equitable, just, inclusive and orderly international economic order, and made important contributions to world peace, security and development, he added.
Finally, he said he hopes China will further develop its friendly cooperative relations with other countries in 2012.
More than 400 people, including State Councilor Dai Bingguo, attended the reception.
