BEIJING - More efforts to fight droughts and floods, as well as ensure a successful grain harvest, are needed, Premier Li Keqiang said at an executive meeting of the State Council on Friday.

Lingering heat has led to severe droughts in South China, while heavy rain has flooded north China's Songhua River.

More drought relief and flood prevention efforts are needed as autumn grain production enters its key phase, Li said after listening to reports on drought relief, flood prevention and grain production.

A drought that has parched China's southern regions since July has left nearly 13 million people without easy access to drinking water and damaged 900,000 hectares of farmland, while floods along the Songhua River have destroyed half a million hectares of farmland and affected two million people.

More support will be given to disaster relief efforts to ensure drinking water for drought victims and prevent floods, Li said.

Post-disaster agricultural production recovery should be enhanced as well, Li said, adding that fiscal support will be provided to support grain-growers and prevent pests and disease.

Insurance and compensation for those whose crops are affected by natural disasters should be enhanced, Li said.
