About 400,000 yuan ($65,650) was missing from an ATM in Shanghai��s Pudong New Area on Wednesday morning. Local police said the money was stolen by a guard who escorted cash to and from the machine, Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reported on Friday.
The money was reported missing on Wednesday afternoon by colleagues of the suspect who came to refill the machine. A security camera had been damaged, but the machine remained functional after the cash was taken.
The suspect, surnamed Shen, was arrested Wednesday night. He confessed to stealing the money to pay off gambling debt, police told the Post.
