The Shaanxi Women's Federation launched a campaign to fight against domestic violence on Monday, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
On this day, designated by the United Nations, the federation carried out intensive public awareness activities via radio, television, newspapers and the Internet to arm women and children with information on fighting against domestic violence.
According to a recent survey by the provincial federation, some 26 percent of women in Shaanxi have been a victim of domestic violence, including verbal abuse, assault, restriction of personal and economic freedoms and rape.
Every year, federations at various levels in the province on average receive some 500 to 2,000 reports of domestic violence.
To better protect women's rights, the provincial federation has held training classes for women and helped victims of domestic violence get legal support.
